WE WON!!! My cheerleaders freakin' won 1st place in the parochial league cheerleading competition.
I am still somewhat giddy with the excitement! Their performances were unbelievable. I expected them to place, but really didn't think we'd win. Sometimes the results are skewed by diocesan politics and our school is not well liked in the diocese because our students win a lot of stuff. But, it has been 11 years since we've won this event. I am so incredibly proud of my cheerleaders! These girls are so deserving.
My own daughter was in tears, "Mom, it's my eighth-grade year; I'm the cheer captain; and we WON! My dream came true!" OK, so what mother's heart wouldn't just burst right then? And, maybe that makes all the guff I've had to endure from other parents a bit more bearable. I confess that while graciously accepting congratulations from a few of these parents, in another, less gracious part of my brain, I was thinking, "HA! Take that! Screw you and your whinny-assed criticism. Obviously, I did something right!" OK, so that's the PG version of what I was thinking. Not very charitable of me, but you know, I think I earned a few moments of gloating. My daughter even said so later. "Mom, didn't you just want to stick your tongue out at those moms who were so nasty to you?" Yes, my daughter is a much nicer person than am I. Vindication is mine.
So, I am off to celebrate some more. Our athletic director told me this morning that he is ordering a permanent banner for the gym commemorating the victory. One of the parents has offered to sponsor custom t-shirts for the girls to celebrate. For our school, this really is a BIG DEAL. I just could not be happier for my cheer squad!
